Session Preview: Ensuring Alignment of Business Development Goals with Overall Corporate StrategyAn Interview with Scott A. Meyer, Ph.D.
Scott A. Meyer, Ph.D., is Senior Director, Strategic Business Development, ZEISS Ophthalmic Devices, and is presenting at the upcoming 5th Annual Medical Device Corporate Strategy & Business Development Conference on January 29-30. Check out a preview of his session below!
Can you describe your role?
I am the Senior Director of Strategic Business Development at Carl Zeiss Meditec in Dublin, California, a division which builds medical devices for diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic disease. In this role, I partner with customers and internal stakeholders to drive opportunities for both organic and inorganic growth.
Could you share a brief overview of your presentation?
My session, “Ensuring Alignment of Business Development Goals with Overall Corporate Strategy” will address how the alignment of business development goals to strategy is the core meaning of “M&A strategy follows business strategy.” Often, organizational complexity and business dynamics create hurdles to following this adage; however, a solid understanding of your business strategy and practical knowledge of the industry are required to establish this alignment. To create a format that brings clarity and facilitates alignment with stakeholders, organizations must take a disciplined approach to extract growth initiatives from strategy and identifying key targets.
What are 1-3 key takeaways you hope attendees will learn from your presentation?
- Have a clear understanding of your operational environment
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of operating from strategy documents and target lists
- Integrate the key outputs of strategy and target evaluation into a single document to create and maintain alignment
As an industry leader, why do you believe attendees should attend this conference?
It is valuable to meet with business development colleagues who share similar challenges that are unique to medical devices. Speakers at this conference foster a positive environment for learning and the exchange of best practices, and provide a context for re-evaluating how to approach med device M&A more efficiently.
